planned giving - The Legacy Society

The Legacy Society of United Way of Wyoming Valley has an ambitious but vitally important goal.  That goal – the attainment of a $20,000,000 endowment – will secure the long-term success of United Way, ensuring that its vital services will always be here for our community. United Way is addressing the changing face of fundraising and making shifts as trends change.

Why should I give to the United Way's Endowment Fund?

An endowment gift perpetuates your care and concern for a community, an institution, or a cause. It also allows you to take advantage of tax deductions when you put together a thoughtful estate plan.

Why should I give specifically to the United Way of Wyoming Valley's Endowment Fund?

Through one gift, you can help so many people with so many different needs. United Way supports more than 30 health and human service agencies meeting identified needs in the Wyoming Valley. United Way is directed by volunteers who work to assure accountability for wise and effective use of contributed dollars. United Way is in touch with the community. Volunteers study current and future health and social service needs and plan for ways to meet those needs most effectively.

For 80 years, United Way of Wyoming Valley has served the community by saving and changing lives. Through numerous recessions and the Great Depression; in times of peace and times of war; providing comfort to victims of Hurricane Agnes; addressing the evolving health concerns including Diphtheria…HIV…AIDS; or ongoing problems of homelessness, hunger and despair, United Way has been there as a vital community resource. Over the years, the United Way continually strives to meet the ever changing needs of the people in the Wyoming Valley.

History has shown that no organization has United Way's distinguished record of uniquely serving the community through changing times and emerging needs. As needs evolve and agency services are initiated to address those needs, United Way of Wyoming Valley has demonstrated the ability to focus dollars on the most effective human services.

To keep pace with the ever-changing needs in our community, United Way must constantly adjust its fundraising course. United Way is dedicated to finding new ways to meet the unmet needs of individuals and families. It is growth in the United Way Endowment which will provide additional resources to meet these needs, as well as new challenges that are certain to arise.

United Way is very grateful to our Legacy Society Members for their generous gifts to our community and to the future of the United Way.

Why does the United Way need an Endowment?

An endowment secures there will be income coming in to the United Way every year. Particularly during years where the annual campaign does not reach its goal or where needs have not been met.

What does the United Way use its endowment for?

How we use the endowment depends on the wishes of our donors. If your gift is unrestricted, volunteers will apply it where the need is greatest. Each year, a portion of our endowment earnings is credited toward the annual campaign effort. Those earnings, when combined with individual and corporate campaign gifts, help maintain vital agency services in the Wyoming Valley.
