About The United Way of Wyoming Valley
United Way brings people together from all across the community: government, businesses, faith groups, non-profits, the labor movement, and ordinary citizens – to tackle issues mattering most to all of us – producing positive and meaningful results.
United Way operates on a system based on the principle that UNITED; we are stronger than we can ever be alone. Our goal is to create long-lasting changes that improve lives, which can only be done by working together.
Thanks to the efforts of countless volunteers, our partner agencies, and the work of our special initiatives: the Poverty to Possibility movement, aimed at reducing the soaring level of childhood poverty in the Wyoming Valley, Success by 6® Program, and the Regional HIV/AIDS Contractor - together, we are improving the quality of life for individuals and families in the Wyoming Valley.
United Way is the most proactive way to create opportunities for a better tomorrow. That's how we LIVE UNITED in the Wyoming Valley.
"Poverty impacts educational achievement, workforce readiness, healthcare, crime and safety, social service need, government funding and regional economic development. Young children do not choose their parents nor do they choose to grow up in poverty. Yet, for more than one in every four children under the age of 18 in Luzerne County, poverty is a very real issue. We need to work harder and differently to help families with young children find pathways out of poverty."
today. tomorrow. forever.
The United Way of Wyoming Valley is a nonprofit whose mission is to bring together individuals and businesses in our area, help them invest in our community and in turn, make it stronger. One third of all children under age 5 in Luzerne County is growing up below the poverty line. It doesn't get much better for all youngsters under age 18; nearly 29 per cent of them live in poverty. Our goal is to reduce those statistics, by creating a movement that engages all of us to bring passion, creativity, and philanthropy to the fight against childhood poverty. Please join us!
People helping people is the premise upon which United Way was founded on in 1921; when United Way of Wyoming Valley first began serving residents of our community. As the area has grown and changed, so have we, working hard to meet existing needs in local neighborhoods.
United Way builds relationships with caring, concerned members of a community by pooling resources to lend a helping hand to those in need.
