The NEA/PSEA (National Education Association/Pennsylvania Education Association) is comprised mainly of teachers and support staff personnel who are employed locally at 12 public school districts and a community college. There is also a local administrative office for the NEA/PSEA located in the Wilkes-Barre area. All of these work sites have provided a variety of support to the United Way over the years.
All the learning institutions organized and represented by the NEA/PSEA are actively involved in the annual United Way campaign, with many of them using NEA/PSEA members to conduct and coordinate the United Way employee campaign. In addition to NEA/PSEA union members being donors to the annual campaign and serving as campaign coordinators and solicitors at their work sites, others serve on United Way's board of directors, the Labor Participation Committee, the campaign cabinet and in other special capacities.
In 2002, United Way of Wyoming Valley created a special award to honor the memory of the late Anthony F. Kane, Jr., a NEA/PSEA member who was a staunch United Way supporter for over 40 years. The award is entitled the "Sarah & Anthony F. Kane, Jr. Achievement Award," and is designed to recognize either a NEA/PSEA association affiliate, or a NEA/PSEA member who has rendered outstanding voluntary or monetary support to United Way of Wyoming Valley and other non-profit organizations.
